A 50th anniversary is a grand occasion. When a married couple reaches the milestone of 50 years spent together, tradition calls for a gift made of gold. When Padrón Cigars Inc. commemorates 50 years of business in September, the celebration will be held with not one, but two special cigars.
One of the two cigars will become part of the Padrón Family Reserve line, and is tentatively entitled Padrón Family Reserve 50. The smoke will likely be five inches long with a ring gauge of 54, and made with well-aged Nicaraguan tobaccos, many of them grown by the Padróns themselves. This smoke will be made on a continuing basis, but not in large quantities.
The second Padrón 50th anniversary smoke will be far more rare, and will come packaged in a high-end humidor containing 50 cigars. Each humidor will be numbered, and each cigar in the series will be individually numbered as well. Humidor No. 1, for example, will contain cigars No. 1 through 50. There will be at least 500 humidors made, and the Padróns are offering the chance for refills. "Whoever buys the box will have the opportunity to purchase another 50 cigars a year for five years," said Jorge Padrón.
Individually numbered cigars are very rare. This is only the second time the Padróns have done a cigar in this fashion—the first was the Padrón Millennium. The Cubans did a numbered cigar with the 1492 release—both cigars are extremely prized among collectors.
The new cigars will be showcased at the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers trade show this summer, with the cigars hitting store shelves around the anniversary in September, but the cigars are still being tweaked.
"We have four or five different blends that we're continuing to taste," company president Jorge Padrón told Cigar Insider during a meeting at Padrón headquarters in Miami. He stressed how much attention he and his family pay to the cigar business, and the rarity of new releases bearing the name Padrón.
"We don't like to make new cigars just to make new cigars," he said.
These Padrons will have black serial numbers
