This is the good life for certain. A few months back I got a call from J.C. Newman in Tampa, FL. I was very excited. After all, they make classics like Diamond Crown and Julius Caesar. They wanted to congratulate the club on all of the success we are having and pick our brains about how to create community within the cigar world and social media. I explained that the success of our club has more to do with our members more than some magical thing I created. I then told them that to share the love and community we have all created by allowing us the honor of having an event at their soon-to-open cigar museum in Tampa and possibly making a cigar for the club(I’m always looking out for us!) They are a big company and while they do not move as quickly as some of the boutiques, their materials and production quality are top tier. This is also a company that is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars fighting the FDA on the infamous regulations we all dread. Support them! After a few revisions to the blends, we arrived at The Good Life. Hand rolled, using the finest and thickest Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper and Nicaraguan fillers, this cigar epitomizes the good life. I truly believe this to be the bench mark of today’s desert style cigars. This is a cigar I will reserve for celebrating life as often as possible. Possibly the most decadent cigar you will ever smoke. Some times I just want to eat it. Like chocolate cake? We could sell this as diet food: all the chocolate cake flavor and none of the calories. Fabric softener on the foot. The cold draw is bakers spices, soy sauce, and pepper. The first third begins with bakers spices like nutmeg, heavy fresh-baked bread, pine, and a richness that is unparalleled. If you have never had chocolate babka it’s sort of like a cinnamon roll but with chocolate instead of cinnamon and no icing. It’s like chocolate swirled bread. It’s heavy, rich, and decadent. This is what I get when I smoke this cigar. Chocolate cake, red wine, mild pepper, sweet sugar, dried floral notes. This really is the closes thing to smoking a chocolate cake. The second third is slightly less sweet. It has herb notes like Italian seasoning and the wood picks up to a nice cedar. Bread is still prominent. At times I am reminded of smacks cereal, sugar smacks. Grainy, slightly sweet, sandalwood, slightly smoky. I am thoroughly enjoying this. In the final third I get a chili seasoning spice, floral notes pick up, there is a cedar wood uptick as well. Now it becomes a gourmet chocolate cake that uses herbs and unique spices. I also get roasted nuts. In the end, I get left with all of these flavors mending together and making a cool menthol like smoke. WOW. The Good Life. A tough, stout, Cuban from the streets. He built a multi-million dollar company out of absolutely nothing except passion and hard work. The American dream. The first time I went to visit Espinosa was the first time I was ever in Hialeah Gardens. Almost all of my cigar shipments come from this area of Hialeah Gardens, Hialeah, and Doral. This is an area outside of downtown Miami that is 100% Cuban. It is like being transported to a different country in South America or the Caribbean. I started to think about how every cigar typically has the city name of Havana and Cuba. Then I started to think about the reality of it all. The cigars we smoke pass through this area more than anywhere else in the world. And I thought to myself, “why the hell doesn’t anyone call their cigar the Hialeah?” So I asked Erik and he said “why the hell would anyone do that?” To which I answered, “Because it’s the truth.”  As much as we like to glamorize the old world and tradition, the truth becomes tradition. And the truth is that since about 2001 and beyond, Hialeah and Hialeah gardens have become THE cigar epicenter. Enjoy one of the better cigars you may have all year. The first third begins with deep oak, red pepper, toast, wheat, a citrus zing that we lovingly call Sprite, and creamy smoke with black pepper in the retro. Tart, creamy, peppery, phantom fruity flavors like Fruit Loops, sweet and cereal like. I truly cannot help but taste Fruit Loops! A sour zing with oak, toast, wheat, and black pepper along with red, rich tobacco, leather, and white pepper with cereal grains. On the second I get rich tobacco, leather, toast, fruity zing, creamy smoke, oak, white pepper, slight graham cracker, and a slight fennel note which changes things. In the final third I get honeysuckle, toast, and the oak turns dank or wetter. There’s a vanilla note, the pepper turns to salt, and there’s an overall wheat note. Creamy like nothing else, and clean on the finish. I get some roasted nuts, sweet creamy smoke and a buttery quality. I keep waiting for the standard Connecticut shade bitterness to arrive and it never happens. Super impressed thus far. The second third begins with hints of florals, sweet croissant, creamy smoke, buttery mouth feel and more of the oats\/grain. There is also an ever so slight citrus that reminds me of sprite. The third third get warmer and rounder in flavor. The almond reappears along with buttered toast. There is a lemongrass citrus and the florals are present as well. Reminds me of chai tea. If I didn’t know any better I would think this is a Cuban cigar in the final third. Pairing notes: Coffee all day. I call this the Good Morning for a reason. Tea with honey. After a breakfast of pancakes or French toast. With an espresso that has some sugar and a lemon rind. With a cream or root beer soda. After an Italian sandwich or a BLT (Uncle Paulie’s makes the best BLT you will ever have). With brandy, bourbon, dry white wine or pilsner beer. I get notes of lightly burned butter which I love, along with herbs and dried flowers or some type of floral. Earthy, herby, buttery, minerally, salty with white pepper and dried floral notes enveloping the palate. Further in, I get hints of lemongrass and a slate-like finish with notes of honey as well. And then begin some notes of bread, oak, cinnamon, and butter. We are off to a great start. The second third begins buttery with florals and oaky smoke along with a mineral finish and salty zing. I’m reminded of sunflower seeds. Sweet florals, oak, butter, salt, and a hint of anise every now and then. Some vanilla too. In the final third I get vanilla, oak, florals, slight salt, and a phantom grapefruit note along with wood and minerals. The floral smells remind me a little of marijuana or a pungent flower of some sort.
